Labuan is a Malaysian island Just above Brunei. Back in the days Labuan was used as a strategic tradepoint. Labuan port was first named Victoria Port in 1844 by captain Edward Belcher an officer with the British Royal Navy. It was a popular place for commercial ships that went down and forward between Singapore and Brunei. Later on the port was handling import and export trades between Singapore, Hong Kong and Sulu. The goods traded where cotton, rice, salt, opium, tobacco, coconuts, beetle nuts, shark fins, clothing coperware and machinery. Sago flour and timber were the main exports from Labuan at that time. Victoria was proclaimed a free port again on 1 september 1956.
Nowadays you see a lot of Brunei people coming over to Labuan in the weekend to sing karaoke and drink alcohol because karaoke boxes and alcohol are prohibited in Brunei.
Labuan is a duty free island and walking around you’ll see a lot of duty free shops like you see on the photos. They mostly sell liquor and chocolate. Compared to the European prices that I’m used to, it wasn’t that cheap.
Labuan is getting quite a lot visitors. Not only travellers who included Labuan in their trip or use it as a transit when travelling from Malaysia to Brunei or vise versa. Also the visitors from Brunei who often go to Labuan for a drink and some karaoke. So all those guests need a place to stay and Labuan got some nice places to offer.
